Although I’ve been to London, a few times and have been living near London for two years, the “East London” was unchartered territory for me. But since my last visit to London I can say with conviction that it is the neighborhood of artists and innovators. Shoreditch, Hoxton, Spitalfields, and Whitechapel make up the four districts of the East End that is increasingly up and coming as a hub of activity. The four districts are so close to the city center but somehow still so far away. In many areas, you can clearly see that the district is in an absolute positive upheaval. You will not find rows of white English houses with colorful doors here but painted streets, modern skyscrapers and cool markets.
Things to do in East London
There are quite a few things to indulge in while you are in East London.
Shopping
Boxpark – A 61-containers pop-up mall invites you to feast and shop in it. On the ground floor, you will not only find the it Nike & Co., but also numerous individual shops of young designers. My favorite here are the containers with postcards, notebooks and lots of pointless things that you do not really need, but still immediately buy. And if you are already hungry, then just drop in on the first floor.
Spitalfields Market – Just a few minutes’ walk away is Spitalfields Market. Here too, there is a similar concept as in Boxpark. It is one of London’s most popular markets because it has something for everyone. Not far from here is also Liverpool Street.
The Brick Lane Vintage Market – In case you’re looking for real vintage treasures, Brick Lane Market is the perfect place for you. If you are a hipster then you will not be leaving this market so fast. I particularly liked the unique items like for e.g. a denim jacket with modern lettering.
One New Change – For those who prefer to visit a mainstream shopping center, I recommend the relatively new (2010) shopping center “One New Change”. Since it is more in the financial district, it is not crowded at the weekend and you can also enjoy a great view over London on the roof from here.
Sightseeing:
London Tower Bridge – London Tower Bridge is a must see when you are in East London. It is within a walking distance of all the neighborhoods.

Breakfast:
Grounded Coffee Company – Accompanying efficient and superb service this place offers food that is not only delicious but fresh, too. Compared with the prices everywhere in London, I found it relatively cheap.
Dinner:
Amber London – I will probably never forget the evening that I spent here! We were so warmly welcomed and accompanied throughout the evening that we did not miss a thing. The icing on the cake was, of course, the Mediterranean cuisine and well every dish that came in front of my nose. Indescribably delicious in a warm and modern location I was blown away by their everything. I have read at many places people recommending its breakfast which is a great hit, too.
Where to stay?
All of the above locations are within walking distance of the New Road Hotel in Whitechapel. The stylish, industrial-style accommodation is perfect for a trip to London. Both price and cleanliness are unparalleled at the New Road Hotel. With the nearby Metro, just 3 minutes away, you can reach the City of London within 20 minutes.
In particular, I liked that I could order modern dishes at breakfast à la carte. Of course, the classic English breakfast is offered here. On the first evening, I was really happy that we could eat in the hotel in the evening. After a long day of sightseeing, there is nothing better than falling asleep in the evening right after a delicious and fulfilling meal.

Obwohl ich jetzt schon einige Male in London war und auch schon für 2 Jahre in der Nähe von London gewohnt habe, ist mir „East London“ bisher nicht so ein Begriff gewesen.
Nach meinem letzten Besuch in London kann ich sagen, dass es das Viertel der Künstler und Kreativen ist! Shoreditch, Hoxton, Spitalfields und Whitechapel bilden die vier Distrikte des East End, die immer mehr im kommen sind! Sie liegen so nah an der Innenstadt aber irgendwie auch so fern! In vielen Bereichen kann man stark erkennen, dass das Viertel in einem absoluten positiven Umbruch steht. Weiße englische Häuserreihen mit bunten Türen findet ihr hier nicht, aber dafür bemalte Straßen, moderne Hochhäuser und coole Märkte!

Shopping
Boxpark – Eine Pop-Up Mall aus 61 Container lädt zum schlemmen und shoppen ein! Im Erdgeschoss wird man nicht nur bei Nike & Co. fündig, sondern auch bei den zahlreichen individuellen Shops der jungen Designer. Mein Favorit sind die Container mit Postkarten, Notizbücher und ganz vielen sinnlosen Dingen, die man eigentlich nicht braucht, aber sofort kauft! Schon hungrig? Dann einfach mal auf der ersten Etage vorbeischauen!
Spitalfields Market – Nur wenige Gehminuten weiter gelangt ihr zum Spitalfields Market. Hier herrscht ein ähnliches Konzept wie im Boxpark. Er zählt zu den beliebtesten Märkten in London, weil er für jeden Geschmack etwas zu bieten! Nicht weit von hier ist auch die Liverpool Street!
The Brick Lane Vintage Market – Sucht ihr aber nach richtigen Vintage Schätzen seid ihr auf dem Brick Lane Market am besten aufgehoben! Als Hipster wird man diesen Markt nicht so schnell verlassen! Mir haben besonders gut die einzigartigen Teile gefallen wie z.B. eine Jeansjacke mit modernen Schriftzügen.
One New Change – Für alle die dann doch lieber ein mainstream Shoppingcenter besuchen wollen, empfehle ich das relativ neue (2010) Shoppingcenter „One New Change“. Da es eher im Bankenviertel liegt, ist hier am Wochenende tote Hose und ihr habt auf dem Dach noch eine tolle Aussicht über London!

London Tower Bridge – London Tower Bridge ist ein Pflichtprogramm, wenn man in East London ist! Sie ist von allen Vierteln fussläufig zu erreichen!

Amber London – An diesen Abend erinnere ich mich unwahrscheinlich gerne zurück! Wir wurden so herzlich empfangen und über den ganzen Abend begleitet, dass es uns an nichts gefehlt hat! Das i-Tüpfelchen war natürlich die mediterrane Küche und jedes Gericht vor meiner Nase! Unbeschreiblich lecker in einer warmen und modernen Location! Ich habe in vielen Empfehlungen gelesen, dass auch das Frühstück ein Hit ist!
Where to stay?
Alle oben beschriebenen Orte sind von dem New Road Hotel in Whitechapel fußläufig zu erreichen. Die stylische Unterkunft im industriellen Stil bietet sich hervorragend an für einen Trip nach London! Sowohl preislich als auch von der Sauberkeit kann man im New Road Hotel nicht meckern. Mit der nah gelegenen Metro (3 Minuten entfernt) erreicht man die Londoner City innerhalb von 20 Minuten.
Besonders gut hat mir gefallen, dass ich beim Frühstück à-la-Carte moderne Gerichte bestellen konnte! Natürlich wird auch das klassische englische Frühstück angeboten!
Am ersten Abend habe ich mich richtig gefreut, dass wir abends auch im Hotel essen konnten! Nach einem langen Sightseeingtag gibt es nichts besseres, als abends direkt nach einem leckeren Essen ins Bett zu fallen.
