Nowadays, a pure airport is hardly worthwhile since it does not generate any appreciable profits. Only by road travel could airports no longer exist, therefore, one came to an idea: the so-called non-aviation area. Here, you will find, for example, shopping malls, guided tours of the airport, and the rolling field, as well as events which are not directly related to the actual flight business. The goal is that airports are attracting tourists or locals as a real excursion destination, thus placing important additional money into the cash register.
I have listed to you my 4 German favorite airports and what they have to offer or not.

Cologne Airport

The Cologne airport is, of course, my absolute favorite! From my home here, I need to go to my second home, only 10 minutes, and still miss a flight from time to time! Due to the train station directly at the terminal, it is not necessary to travel by car or taxi. You can drive quite relaxed with the train to the terminal.
The airport is not too big and everything is within easy reach. However, almost 30 airlines fly to 129 destinations around the world. Most of the trips I start are from here.
There are more and more modern restaurants, such as Ben Green, at Cologne Airport. Just last time, I tried the healthy salad with salmon! Tastes good, but also costs a little more.

Unfortunately, there are only a few long-distance flights to this day. However, an expansion is already being planned. The Priority Pass Lounge did not open long and is not very nice either. You can definitely work on it here.

Also aufpassen!
Insgesamt 60 Airlines fliegen weltweit 180 Ziele an.

The shopping offer in the Düsseldorf airport is huge. Again, I have already spent time in the H & M and then missed my plane! So watch out! Both before check-in, as well as behind, there are a lot of shopping possibilities.
You want to have a good time? In the basement, there is a food hall and a rewe to get the everyday food. I almost always visit the Turkish bistro!
The lounge is nicely decorated and cozy, but I did not expect anything else in Düsseldorf at the “High Society”.
A total of 60 airlines fly 180 destinations worldwide. With Lufthansa, you can fly from DUS directly to NYC for only 300 €.
However, I do not recommend coming by train because the train station is not at the airport. However, there is a shuttle to the train station.

The terminal is nice and cozy, so you can spend your time here. If you still have time, the terminals are so far apart that you have to hurry if you are in the wrong terminal.
Those who are tired of their sprint or flight can even lie down and rest in the sleeping cabins of the terminal. One hour costs about 30 € but it is worth it!
The shopping possibilities are almost unlimited in MUC. Here, everyone really finds something.
Munich Airport also has a few disadvantages. The journey to the city takes about 40 minutes and this is really annoying since the flight from Cologne takes only 50 minutes. Not only the inner city of Munich has problems with its opening hours, the Munich airport also has. Whoever flies late has little entertainment!

Frankfurt (FRA):

Frankfurt Airport is the fourth largest airport in Europe and ranks 12th in the world. At  Frankfurt airport, you can “reinfahren” by train! The train station is directly at the airport – even including ICE! Even better, you cannot arrive. BUT if you plan a trip to the airport with the German train, it should not take a lot of time! On my penultimate trip to New York, I wanted to go from Cologne with the ICE to Frankfurt, and in the middle of the route was then the end station. I had to take a taxi for 200 € to the airport and came fully stressed 50 minutes before departure at the airport. I was really lucky that my suitcase was still accepted.

Although the airport is larger than Düsseldorf or Munich, the shop is, however, a lot smaller.
Again, the removal of the terminals is a major drawback. One runs a very long distance here from one terminal to the other.
Not to be missed is that all airports, except for Munich, have a 24/7 supermarket, so you can do your shopping around the clock.
